A Veterans Service Officer from the VFW, DAV, American Legion, or your county veterans office can prepare and file your claim for free. Find an accredited rep at va.gov.
They can only charge a fee after you appeal an initial decision (not for the first claim), and fees are regulated and must be reasonable (commonly a percentage of past-due back pay). VA has to approve the fee agreement.
Unaccredited companies that charge a percentage of your monthly increase, or a big flat "coaching" fee, are a red flag. Charging for help on an initial claim is against federal law, they can't represent you to the VA, and they can put your claim at risk. If someone wants a cut of your rating, walk away and use a free accredited VSO.
